Technical leadership in practice

Leadership decisions move beyond implementation.

As responsibility grows, the difficult calls shift from solving the technical problem yourself to setting direction, deciding how work should be organized, creating the conditions for execution, and being accountable for what happens next.

Engineering Leadership focuses on technical strategy, execution, measurement, accountability, and the long-term cost of what gets built.

High-Performing Teams focuses on how teams are structured and run, including delivery flow, AI teammates, engineering metrics, and the operating model around the work.

Facilitators

Who leads the cohorts?

Each facilitator stays with their cohort across the five weeks, so later sessions can build on what participants tried between sessions.

How the five weeks work.

Selected QCon and InfoQ material provides a starting point. The live sessions are where participants examine the approach, challenge assumptions, and hear how the same decision changes in other organizations.

Between sessions, participants put the thinking into practice against a decision they already own. The next session builds on what happened.

In week five
Before Selected QCon and InfoQ material gives the cohort a technical or organizational starting point.
During Examine the approach with the facilitator and practitioners working under different organizational and technical constraints.
Between Use the week’s thinking against a team operating question, delivery problem, or decision you already own.
Back in session Return with what held up, what changed, and which assumptions need another look.
Week five The final week is the capstone: a target operating model for your team, presented to the cohort.
Different operating contexts

Compare your assumptions with people working elsewhere.

Your experience is shaped by the systems and organizations you have worked in. The cohort puts your reasoning alongside experienced practitioners dealing with different architecture, scale, regulation, incentives, and team structures.

The useful comparison is where an approach transfers, where it changes, and why. You still own the decision and what happens next in your environment.

The capstone

Finish with work you can point to.

Build a target operating model showing how team structure, delivery, AI, roles, and responsibilities fit together.

For experienced practitioners

Who are InfoQ Leadership certification programs for?

Designed for experienced software practitioners who already carry technical or team-level responsibility and can connect the cohort to work they currently own.

✓ You already set technical direction or influence how a team works
— You are looking for introductory management training
✓ You can connect the sessions to a current strategy, execution, team, or operating-model decision
— You mainly want recorded or self-paced content
✓ You want to compare approaches across different organizational contexts
— Your main goal is collecting a credential
✓ You can attend and participate in the live sessions
— You cannot commit to the live format

Typical participants include Senior, Staff, Lead, and Principal Engineers, Software Architects, Technical Leads, Engineering Managers, Engineering Directors, VPs of Engineering, and other senior technical leaders.

The programs are designed for experienced practitioners, generally with at least five years of professional experience.

Start from QCon and InfoQ technical material.

Selected QCon talks and InfoQ technical material provide the starting point for each week. The cohort is where participants examine those ideas against different systems, organizations, and constraints.

Leadership topic FAQ

Which Leadership program should I choose? +

Choose based on the responsibility you need to move forward.

Engineering Leadership
Technical strategy, execution, measurement, accountability, and the long-term operating cost of technical decisions.
High-Performing Teams
Team structure, delivery flow, AI teammates, engineering metrics, and the team’s target operating model.
Are these management courses? +

They are designed for experienced technical practitioners carrying leadership responsibility. Engineering managers are part of the audience, but so are Staff+ engineers, architects, and technical leads.

Why a cohort instead of self-paced leadership material? +

Leadership decisions depend heavily on organizational context. The cohort gives you recurring time to examine an approach with people working under different constraints, put the thinking into practice, and return with what happened.

How much time should I allow? +

Plan for four live hours each week. The exact session pattern varies by program. There is also time-boxed application work between sessions.

Are the sessions recorded? +

No. The sessions are not recorded so participants can discuss current work and organizational context more openly.

How do I earn the certification? +

Certification is based on consistent participation in the live cohort and successful completion of the program’s capstone.

Can my company pay by invoice? +

Invoice payment is available subject to the current payment deadlines and checkout terms.

Can I get help making the case internally? +

Yes. Use the Convince Your Manager page to copy a guided AI prompt or start from a ready-to-edit email template. Choose the cohort you are considering so the current dates, price, facilitator, time commitment, and capstone are included.
